The wet skin secret

Canberra in June is not for the faint hearted.

I know this because I've been going down for the handmade market for years. Coming from Sydney, I thought I knew what winter was. I didn't. Canberra winter is something else entirely. The cold you expect. The dryness you don't. Your lips feel it within minutes of stepping outside. It isn't long before the rest of your skin starts to resemble snake skin.

That first June market changed everything.

Almost every second person who stopped at my stall was asking for something to fix their dry skin. I directed them to our lotion. Without even trying it they'd say the same thing — we need something richer than lotion. Something oily. Something that goes deep.

I went home thinking.

Our mousse was born out of those conversations. I formulated a whipped body butter from shea butter. Rich and buttery, with the most impressive fluffy texture. I was really happy with it, until I started testing it.

It was tacky. I could feel it sitting on top of my skin. It did eventually absorb but it was taking its sweet time.

I believe skincare can be completely natural. No stabilisers, no synthetic thickeners, no shortcuts. So whatever I was going to do to fix this, the solution had to be natural too.

I kept going back to the shower. Kept testing. And one night before I reached for the towel, I just tried it. I half expected the water on my skin to thin it out — less mousse, it would absorb faster. Mousse straight onto wet skin.

The difference was so different. Silky. Absorbed properly. No tacky residue. No oily sheets. No greasy clothes.

Heres what i learnt. The water on your skin gives the oil something to bind to. When you rub them together they temporarily emulsify — just long enough for your skin to absorb both. Your skin is drawn to water. The oil comes with it.

The method works with our mousse and with our body oils. Don't towel off. Apply while your skin is still wet. Give it five minutes to absorb. That's it. What used to feel heavy and slow becomes something else entirely.
